Inventory Financing for Retailers, Importers and E-Commerce Brands in Canada

The product businesses sell is also where their cash is trapped. Here is how Canadian retailers, importers, wholesalers and e-commerce brands fund the stock buy without draining the operating account.

The Problem: Cash Locked on the Shelf. A retailer stocking for the season, an importer paying for a container at origin, an e-commerce brand ordering a production run — all pay for inventory months before it sells. That gap is structural, and it is the reason a profitable product business can still miss payroll. Inventory financing exists for exactly this: a facility secured on the stock itself, advancing typically 50–70% of the cost value of eligible goods, from $50,000 to $2,000,000.

How the Facility Works. The lender takes a first charge on the inventory, advances against its cost value, and the facility revolves — repaid as stock sells, redrawn as it restocks, on 3 to 12 month terms. Standard goods with a live resale market support the strongest advance rates. The stock stays in your warehouse (or your fulfillment centre, with the warehouse acknowledging the charge) and keeps selling normally.

What Strengthens a File. Three things move the number: a clean inventory listing at cost value, supplier invoices behind it, and turnover history that shows how fast the stock converts. A business with disciplined reporting gets a stronger facility than one with better stock and no records. Obsolete goods, consignment stock and inventory pledged elsewhere fall out of the borrowing base.

Where It Fits Against the Alternatives. If the bank will extend the operating line, that is usually cheaper — but operating lines are margined against receivables, and buying stock creates no receivable. A merchant cash advance closes faster and asks nothing about the stock, at a higher cost. Inventory financing sits between: secured pricing, funding in days once reporting is in hand, and sized to the stock rather than the balance sheet. Voxen quotes each facility per file, with no application fee and no credit impact.
